The Company:
A large, not-for-profit and nonpartisan association of Australasian road transport and traffic agencies, who represents all levels of government in Australia and New Zealand. They provide high-quality, practical, and impartial advice, information, tools, and services to help its members deliver efficient, reliable, and safe mobility. Funded by Australian and New Zealand government transport agencies.
The Challenge:
They customer needed to modernise their Azure environment to support future growth and improve security. Their legacy Azure resources were not aligned with Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF), and the environment lacked a well-defined landing zone, consistent deployment practices, and centralised governance. The migration also involved complex legacy applications, multiple network links, and a transition from Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) to Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) subscriptions.
The Solution:
The customer engaged AC3 to lead the migration and build a new CAF-aligned Azure Landing Zone. The solution was designed to co-exist with the legacy environment during the transition, minimising disruption and ensuring service continuity.
Key elements of the solution included:
- CAF-Aligned Azure Landing Zone: AC3 architected and deployed a new Azure Landing Zone tailored to their operational and security requirements. The landing zone was built using CAF best practices, ensuring a compliant, scalable, and secure foundation for future workloads.
- Application Discovery and Infrastructure Mapping: AC3 collaborated closely with them and third-party vendors to identify and catalogue all applications and dependencies within the legacy environment. This discovery phase was critical in developing a comprehensive migration plan and avoiding service disruptions.
- Complex Migration Execution: The migration involved transitioning Azure resources and subscriptions from the classic Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) model to Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) Azure plan subscriptions. AC3 navigated the limitations of Azure Resource Mover through meticulous planning, custom workarounds, and expert execution.
- Security and Governance Controls: AC3 implemented decentralised management and robust governance policies, including role-based access controls (RBAC), network segmentation, and policy enforcement. These controls ensured that the new environment met their security and compliance standards.
- Operational Readiness and Documentation: AC3 provided detailed documentation and knowledge transfer to their internal teams, ensuring they were equipped to manage the new environment post-migration. This included guidance on managing whitelisting, resolving residual issues, and completing post-migration tasks.
The Results:
AC3 delivered a secure, scalable, and future-ready cloud environment that enabled the customer to modernise their infrastructure with confidence. The migration was executed with minimal downtime, ensuring uninterrupted service for their partners and customers. By transitioning to a CAF-aligned landing zone, the customer gained a robust foundation for future digital initiatives, with improved governance, decentralised management, and enhanced operational efficiency. The project also achieved significant cost savings through resource cleanup and consolidation, while laying the groundwork for ongoing modernisation and innovation. With this transformation, the customer is now better positioned to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing services across its transport and traffic initiatives.
